The Tiny Desk Outstanding meme, explained
Updated October 30, 2026
The Outstanding Tiny Desk meme uses an AI-edited clip of Charlie Wilson’s 2023 NPR Tiny Desk performance, putting other faces into the band. One version shared on TikTok features football coaches.
Where the clip comes from
Charlie Wilson sang lead in The Gap Band, and "Outstanding" is one of their best-known songs. When he played NPR's Tiny Desk in 2023, he closed with it: the band locks in, he breaks into a huge laugh in close-up, the sax takes a solo, and the whole desk sings it out. That last stretch is the clip.
How it became a meme
- 1982
The Gap Band release "Outstanding" on Gap Band IV. Charlie Wilson is their lead singer.
- June 2023
NPR Music posts Charlie Wilson's Tiny Desk concert. He closes the set with "Outstanding", laughing his way through the last chorus with the band.
- A TikTok edit
An AI edit shared on TikTok puts football coaches into a cut of the performance.
- Now
This template lets you choose photos for up to five spots in a short version of the cut.
Why it works
- The lead gets a close-up with a big, joyful laugh
- Five band spots give you room to choose a cast
- The short vertical cut keeps the band, lead and sax moments together
- The familiar song ties the different shots together
Is the Outstanding Tiny Desk video real?
