The Tiny Desk Outstanding template, shot by shot
Updated October 30, 2026
Tiny Desk Outstanding uses a fixed template: an approximately 18-second vertical AI edit based on Charlie Wilson’s NPR Tiny Desk performance, with The Gap Band’s “Outstanding” on the soundtrack. Here’s where each spot appears.
The four shots
These clips show the coach reference. Add photos of people or pets to replace selected spots; unchanged spots stay cats, and clearing a cat keeps the coach from the reference clip.
- 0:00–0:05Band
- 0:05–0:12Big laugh
- 0:12–0:15Sax solo
- 0:15–0:18Band again
Which spots you fill
| Time | Shot | Who's on screen |
|---|---|---|
| 0:00–0:05 | Band | Keys, backing vocals left and right |
| 0:05–0:12 | Big laugh | Lead vocals (the Charlie Wilson part) |
| 0:12–0:15 | Sax solo | Sax, with keys peeking in |
| 0:15–0:18 | Band again | Keys, backing vocals left and right |
Lead vocals get the big close-up, sax gets the solo, and keys plus the two backing singers appear in both band shots. The price is the same for 1 to 5 photos.
Why it starts on the band shot
The viral version opens with the lead singer in side profile. This template begins on the band shot and keeps the remaining cut.

Template questions
Is the Tiny Desk Outstanding template free?
Tiny Desk Outstanding uses its AI template to make a video for $9.90. Some CapCut templates provide edits or effects, but their features and prices can vary.
Can I change the song or the cuts?
No. The template is the viral cut with the original song, because that is what people recognise. You choose who is in it, not how it is edited.
Do I need CapCut or an editing app?
No. Add at least one photo, sign in and get credits, then make the video. Download the MP4 with the song and a silent copy.
Who should go on lead vocals?
Choose whoever you want in the closest shot: yourself, a friend, family member or pet. Lead vocals get the big laugh close-up.
Can I fill only some of the spots?
Yes. Add 1 to 5 photos at the same price. The stage starts with five cats; unchanged cats stay, and clearing a cat keeps the coach from the reference clip.
